In December 2016, NUS and and responsible investment charity ShareAction joined members of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) – the UK’s largest private pension scheme for universities and other higher education institutions – to call for an end to investments in controversial weapons. USS provides pensions for over 300,000 academics and academic-related staff, and has almost £50 billion in assets. A significant proportion its funds are invested in companies and industries that member campaign group Ethics for USS deem highly unethical.
